Korean Soju Etiquette & Hwesik Survival Guide: Drink Like a Korean (Without Dying)
Koreans drink more hard alcohol per capita than any country (~14 shots/week per capita vs Russia's ~6). Soju is the unofficial national drink — over 3 billion bottles consumed annually. Drinking is THE way Korean relationships solidify in business, family, and friendships. If you want to do business in Korea or marry into a Korean family, you'll drink. A lot. Survival starts with etiquette.
Pour etiquette (술 따르기): 1) Pour with TWO HANDS for senior (right hand on bottle, left on right elbow). 2) Pour with ONE HAND for peer/junior. 3) NEVER pour your own drink (Korean superstition — you become a beggar). 4) When senior pours for you — hold cup with two hands. 5) Tilt head AWAY from senior when drinking (sign of respect). Foreigners get more leeway but learning the codes wins long-term respect.
Drinking order & hierarchy: senior drinks first. They may toast — 건배 (geon-bae 'cheers') or 위하여 (wi-ha-yeo 'for the cause'). After clink, drink. Don't sip — down it (especially first shot). Then food. Repeat. Senior controls pace. Junior pouring slower than senior drinking is considered rude.
회식 (hwesik) — Korean company drinking sessions. 1차 (first round): restaurant + drinks 2-3 hours. 2차 (second round): bar/pub + drinks 1-2 hours. 3차 (third round): noraebang (karaoke) + drinks. Some companies: 4차 (fourth round) — only the most committed/most drunk. Foreigners surviving 회식 = earning Korean colleague respect.
Survival hacks: eat before drinking (Korean drinking always with food). Order anju (안주 — drinking food) like jeon, samgyeopsal, anything fried. 'Sansu juseyo' (water please) between rounds. Don't refuse first 2-3 shots. After 4-5 shots, slower pace is acceptable. Hangover cure: 해장국 (hae-jang-guk — hangover soup) at 24/7 places. Ask 'haejang-guk eodi-yeyo?' to find one.
